Life doesn’t have a rewind button, but every once in a while, you get a chance for a do-over. I had one of those opportunities last night and it was wonderful!
The first time that Ryan “proposed” to me 13 years ago, it was a bit anticlimactic. I was folding laundry and he tossed a plastic M and M container onto my pile of clean clothes and said, “Here you go so you don’t go bugging me about it since you know I picked it up today.”Inside was the ring. No getting down on one knee, no violins in the background, no inkling of romance at all what-so-ever! I won’t say that I was disappointed, but I don’t think it would have gotten many hits on You Tube under the search topic “epic wedding proposals.”
Fast forward to 2012… I am pregnant with Cruz and my normally dainty hands had outgrown my wedding ring. I put it away for safe keeping and there it stayed for four years. I tried it on every once in awhile to see if it fit… and then I put it back in safe keeping hoping that soon it might fit better. Last month I finally accepted that the baby fat ain’t goin’ nowhere so I had my ring resized.
While walking through the mall to the jewelers, I thought to myself, “I onna give that boy one more chance to do it right!” I delivered the ring to Ryan and told him I would wear it again when he can give me a proper proposal. So I waited… And waited…
Finally last night, while we were leaving for my niece’s wedding, Ryan pulls the ring from a plastic bag and says, “So do you wanna go to the wedding with me as my wife or my mistress?” (It has been our joke for the last four years that my ring less hand next to his hand with a wedding band makes me look more like his mistress than his wife!) I looked him square in the face and said, “Nope! Not good enough. I am raising the bar of romance and that doesn’t cut it!”
At the reception, while dancing with Ryan to our wedding song, I was thinking to myself, “C’mon, man! This is the perfect opportunity!!”But nothing. A few songs later, BeYonce’s Single Ladies came on and I hopped up there and danced my heart out.
Ryan yelled, “Hey, your not single!” I held my hand up and of course told him, “If you like it than you should’ve put a ring on it!”
Right then, in front of everyone, he pulled my beautiful ring from his wallet, ran onto the dance floor and put it back on my finger where it belongs! I t was perfect. Magical. The most romantic thing he has ever done for me. My heart melted and my knees got weak. My Prince Charming swept me off of my feet and I said, “I do… again.”
